Launch of the Database on Violence Against Women by the UN Secretary General

It is anticipated that easy access to current data, encouragement of additional data collection, increased opportunities for information exchange, and a stronger knowledge base for effective policy responses to prevent and address violence against women will result from this publicly accessible and searchable database. Additionally, the database is meant to serve as a direct link to the Secretary General’s UNiTE campaign to end violence against women.

The majority of the data in the database is derived from answers to the Secretary General’s questionnaire on violence against women. Ireland was one of the 61 UN members who provided questionnaire responses, and 34 of those responses have been added to the database. Soon, the remainder will be added.

Other data is derived from statements made by the UN and other questionnaires delivered to the UN Secretary General. The database has now been updated with Ireland’s response.

Access to the database is available at www.un.org/esa/vawdatabase.
