Sexual and Domestic Violence – Questions for 21st Century Justice

Conference co-hosted by The Council of the Bar of Ireland and The Law Society of Ireland in liaison with Cosc – The National Office for the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence on Saturday 3 November 2012

About the Conference

Cosc would like to congratulate the Bar Council and the Law Society for co-hosting a very successful conference on sexual and domestic violence. This conference, for legal practitioners and academics, provided an opportunity for dialogue on the complexity of domestic and sexual violence cases and consideration of how these cases are managed within the justice system.

The conference was opened by Mr. Alan Shatter T.D., Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence and was chaired by Ms. Justice Maureen Harding Clark, Judge of the High Court.  The speakers addressed the perspectives of barristers, solicitors, psychologists (and other practitioners) as well as that of victims.

Themes explored included: relevant processes of the justice system; policy and legislative developments; impacts on individuals and their families affected by domestic/sexual violence; training and awareness-raising among legal practitioners; difficulties in relation to successful prosecution of cases; and meeting the expectation of victims of domestic and sexual violence.  Click here for a link to the conference programme and the biography of speakers.
