We're nearly there!  - Update on development of National Strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence

One of Cosc’s primary tasks is the development of a National Strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based violence.  The strategy will set out the general vision and objectives and actions to tackle these crimes over the five years from 2010 to the end of 2014. The overall aim of this work is to reduce the prevalence of the crimes and to ensure that the system of prevention and response functions effectively in a co-ordinated manner, increasing the understanding of the general public and professional services, supporting victims and ensuring the accountability of offenders.

Following a process of research, consultations and committee development at national and regional level, Cosc produced an outline of the high level goals, key objectives, actions and activities to be included in the strategy. Consultations on the outline strategy were held with key State stakeholders, the National Steering Committee on Violence against Women, NGOs representing men, the elderly, children, and vulnerable groups to ensure that the direction of the strategy is sensible and reasonable. Observations from the new Regional Advisory Committees are expected shortly.

A first draft of the strategy has now been prepared and will be circulated in the coming weeks to the State stakeholders for agreement.  The Strategy is on schedule as planned for completion by the end of the year with a view to publication and to begin implementation in early 2010. Cosc thanks all of our partners for the wonderful commitment to date and looks forward to working together to implement the strategy.
